<i>E5N1</i>’s busy weekend continued with a game of D and D this afternoon with a few of his friends. Meanwhile, <i>Exile #3</i> arrived home, having had a lovely week in Florida. <i>Exile #1</i> and I had slightly less fun things to do this weekend, following some water encroachment in our basement from last weekend’s heavy rain - we currently have a garage full of furniture and boxes - while we clean and dry things out. But we made the process of as entertaining as we could and have hopefully made some progress.<br />

It took me rather too long to realize it wasn't coming from any of our indoor plumbing but from the sump pump discharge.<br />
<br />
To be fair, the sump pump in this house rarely runs and as far as I know I've never heard it before.<br />
<br />
When I went to investigate, I saw that it was producing a lot of water with a great deal of force and - as a result of the non-issue nature of its past operation - straight down into the ground by the foundation.<br />
<br />
This was the second revision of my construction to move the water further away from the house. I'm quite satisfied with it. The whole neighborhood seems to be having the same issue with various pipes steering water into driveways and storm drains.<br />
<br />

<br /><br /><div>
Meanwhile, the basement carpet is a little damp but there is little apparent damage at this point. The shop-vac and dehumidifier are being called upon to dry the carpet, but I suspect it will be a losing battle until the ground water returns to normal levels.<img border="0" data-original-height="77" data-original-width="193" height="50" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgFNQIRfQ80Ohkc3srAUQmZAVydo85UKIcxzoHwdnuvrHmuovjaUE1O4t94CeJAUAaWKxh8eKu5zcIQr3OY_dtx6Uh3IxcXyzmRhDzCER2mpILeyUj0ahMF6jgSrpF0uvcETLvM5kEyOyogsJxET0hvWDkVyzcKutoLtCYKsLa4UXCv57ca7L511j5O" style="border: medium none; float: right; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px;" width="125" /></div>the_exilehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08317567327641097329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837685461130866377.post-26141907934124624352024-03-10T22:46:00.000-04:002024-03-11T11:46:57.314-04:00Day 17.060: Exile #2’a Sunday Column #471<b><i>Exile #2</i> writes...</b><br />

First, they did their five minute setup of the set with the curtain open so we could see what was involved. Impressively, despite a far-from-simple set, the combined cast and crew assembled it in less than three minutes. The play itself was a hoot with <i>E5N1</i> taking on one of the leading roles and doing a great job along with the rest of a large cast. </div><div><br /></div><div>The other departure was that they were allowed to come and take a bow. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH3nJgSAPuzBoogLFblkcryKUECHBNTyIilbBbuPndd4JH3lpse1CcAEb4FVMoKM384j9EczIxt1MPBLNPvU1VBhqsjfD06qbXwEf1lDf_NGx81t5bGsQ2GsQZ3ypj-0BEUNS64KeDOiJd5UMmnjf3rOqliILiSirB6w5WIteDrIhR1BEbHl7oeY4Glng/s1438/IMG_2263.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1078" data-original-width="1438" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH3nJgSAPuzBoogLFblkcryKUECHBNTyIilbBbuPndd4JH3lpse1CcAEb4FVMoKM384j9EczIxt1MPBLNPvU1VBhqsjfD06qbXwEf1lDf_NGx81t5bGsQ2GsQZ3ypj-0BEUNS64KeDOiJd5UMmnjf3rOqliILiSirB6w5WIteDrIhR1BEbHl7oeY4Glng/s320/IMG_2263.HEIC" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiv4-LDi76IHDyxP1sN-JNs3eAqEqxjYmru464k5Ztn6IsSN8c6a-sjVsiOS4Pr3DUGg2bDTXhQ1r4RGVvaZul1RU5sXvLmmGh1hxOPwo1b3z_eJ9U6Xeq74ep_KQS_kXKlTGTMlPoArxesoxw0vYfZ7UTnS9mYvPwFGMqWkvQ4PghtDzfNTUnF1XUWGc/s3999/IMG_2265.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1764" data-original-width="3999" height="141" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiv4-LDi76IHDyxP1sN-JNs3eAqEqxjYmru464k5Ztn6IsSN8c6a-sjVsiOS4Pr3DUGg2bDTXhQ1r4RGVvaZul1RU5sXvLmmGh1hxOPwo1b3z_eJ9U6Xeq74ep_KQS_kXKlTGTMlPoArxesoxw0vYfZ7UTnS9mYvPwFGMqWkvQ4PghtDzfNTUnF1XUWGc/s320/IMG_2265.HEIC" width="320" /></a></div><div><br />

It turns river water into drinking water (including ours) so we are very appreciative of it in principle, and now at least two Exiles have seen a little of how it’s done and the were excited to learn that one of the processes is flocculation and that it takes place in a flocculator.<div><br /></div><div>Here are a few of <i>Exile #2</i>’s photos. Not including, as far as I know, the flocculator, but including some fat pipes. One helpfully labeled “Raw Water”, presumably to avoid confusion with the precooked variety. I'm actually feeling pretty good about life today. I woke up sick on Friday and after powering through a morning at work; I managed to get a last minute medical appointment and a diagnosis and some antibiotics by the end of the day. Saturday was pretty miserable, Sunday a little better.<div><br /></div><div>By Monday morning I was feeling better still, but decided not to attempt a day of work. I’m now sure that was the right call because, despite feeling almost back to normal today, I still ran out of steam as the work-day drew to a close. </div><div><br /></div><div>Not the weekend or start to the week I’d anticipated, but I suppose it’s all gone pretty well given the starting point. <br /><div><div><div>

Guess who I rounded up and brought home today? Yes, it’s <i>Exile #4</i>! They’re here for just one week before they head back for their fourth and final term of the academic year. They came armed with the entirely expected boot/trunk full of dirty washing but also a container of Welsh cakes from their very own baking session in a friend’s kitchen! I’m sure the week will fly by but it’s lovely to have them home.<br />

Our resident red squirrel is getting bolder (and somewhat more destructive)! I caught them, this week, in the act of ripping our grill cover to shreds. I presume that means there will shortly be more red squirrels in the neighborhood and not just that it had taken against the cover in some way.<br />

It was cold and breezy, but felt good nevertheless. When we got down to the overlook over the Saco River estuary mud flats, we saw another birder who asked if we'd seen it, assuming we knew something we did not - that a snow goose had been spotted among its Canadian cousins.<div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDFgyAEmoj_-EP7brh84iD4Euo7_yAjB_0l9pNVUuo6PteZiLXjdet0jOoH6aDtKnr-328zhJxg2n7So6Vo8KD-VOR6RQNIq0HMXaRKJeSKAT2H_pZM5vwgUeZwDK8xXKsDk1DSstaMLBMfsr2bbE2P3diwM5ZvC1BJh5qrggycXPd1J6X-IJ0d1rvKEk/s1160/IMGP2805a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1160" data-original-width="1160" height="379" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDFgyAEmoj_-EP7brh84iD4Euo7_yAjB_0l9pNVUuo6PteZiLXjdet0jOoH6aDtKnr-328zhJxg2n7So6Vo8KD-VOR6RQNIq0HMXaRKJeSKAT2H_pZM5vwgUeZwDK8xXKsDk1DSstaMLBMfsr2bbE2P3diwM5ZvC1BJh5qrggycXPd1J6X-IJ0d1rvKEk/w379-h379/IMGP2805a.JPG" width="379" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Wxl8M-kVDRPQLiXUbCMIEjWHKNKnqfJFYEUj7Fo_zSYY_ER4ODeprGqyRJwlrg-pOijIQ4xqoFhfuCkSNeIjK3pTw2MPHEuGC2o1bhdv4msDP8s2Hvm-MICYoKt0UTrpuw15njqazY57-E5toPODQZSQbQ0ldHDbyaIAvdVQ-KUhSMs83rnW59fPPd0/s614/IMGP2817a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="614" data-original-width="614" height="391" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Wxl8M-kVDRPQLiXUbCMIEjWHKNKnqfJFYEUj7Fo_zSYY_ER4ODeprGqyRJwlrg-pOijIQ4xqoFhfuCkSNeIjK3pTw2MPHEuGC2o1bhdv4msDP8s2Hvm-MICYoKt0UTrpuw15njqazY57-E5toPODQZSQbQ0ldHDbyaIAvdVQ-KUhSMs83rnW59fPPd0/w391-h391/IMGP2817a.JPG" width="391" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ8CzFKsgCM1M2ePm3CiaqEOjcXRXhR26QW-JLhIPamRM_tnraZMR1YKvbL7dOaDkYg6tv5S_FrmFFC9dahlwNqJwlIraTE85HyxSKHQESnCs6xEoC8OakoIn8Rapo6lzVlCBEinjwYN_-3Vzpp2pw89nEfjHeeq0onqehWlDv6eg3nA7AygpObILxL58/s723/IMGP2853a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="723" data-original-width="723" height="378" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ8CzFKsgCM1M2ePm3CiaqEOjcXRXhR26QW-JLhIPamRM_tnraZMR1YKvbL7dOaDkYg6tv5S_FrmFFC9dahlwNqJwlIraTE85HyxSKHQESnCs6xEoC8OakoIn8Rapo6lzVlCBEinjwYN_-3Vzpp2pw89nEfjHeeq0onqehWlDv6eg3nA7AygpObILxL58/w378-h378/IMGP2853a.JPG" width="378" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div>Peterson shows their normal overwintering range only as far north as Delaware or so, Sibley has them as "rare" in Maine - as does Vickery who notes that occasional overwintering birds have become more common in this area since the 90's.<br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Apart from that surprise, what we saw was rather mundane - a lot of Canada geese, some mallards, a crow and a few dark-eyed juncos.</div><div>
