Day 11.270: Exile #2's Sunday Column #223

Exile #2 writes...

Yesterday, we visited Pemaquid Point, one of the crinkly bits along the mid coast of Maine that we hadn’t explored yet. While we were there, we took the opportunity to tick another lighthouse off our list. Pemaquid Point Light had to be completely taken apart and rebuilt early on in its life because the wrong sort of mortar had been used in its construction. Fortunately, the rebuild seems to be holding together nicely. The lighthouse itself is not very tall but it has a commanding position above a jagged and treacherous-looking expanse of rock.

Plus, you can climb up inside, and I’m never going to turn down the opportunity to have a close-up look at a Fresnel Lens. To add to the drama, there was a high surf advisory, and the ocean was putting on a quite a show.

Exile #3 and I wandered down to a small outbuilding, which turned out to be the oil store. Not surprisingly, it was at a safe distance from the other buildings.

More surprising was the fact that oil was delivered by boat, the boat getting as close to the rocks as the crew dared to take it so that they could send the oil across on a cable. These days the volunteers rely on electricity, and are (slightly reluctantly) getting ready to make the switch to LED bulbs. The lighthouse may not be strictly necessary anymore but it is beloved.
