I've been home sick from work today. I'm hopeful that I can be back to normal service tomorrow but we shall see.
Meanwhile - I spotted this moth when I was at work one day this week - it's one of those that looks like a bit of fungus if it sits on a tree, but was less well disguised on the window - especially when seen from "underneath":

Day 12.201: Putting the "old" in "Old Port"
I don't know how old these remnants of old wooden docks are, but I'm guessing old enough to justify being called "old". I also like them.

Day 12.199: Exile #2's Sunday Column #258
Exile #2 writes...
Exile #3 and Exile #4 had a well-deserved rest today. We even got to eat both lunch and dinner all together - something that we didn’t think had happened for a few weeks. After dinner, we decided to take advantage of the lovely evening to go for a walk along the promenade in Portland. It was busy both with locals playing and picnicking and many visitors out strolling. We saw an extremely fancy private yacht and a large tanker heading out to sea, and we met an unbelievably cute 9 week old Australian Shepherd pup, which definitely made Exile #3’s evening!

Day 12.198: Festival of Nations
While the girls were both at work this afternoon, the rest of us managed an outing to Deering Oaks Park in Portland where we visited the Festival of Nations.
It was a fun event on a pretty much perfect summer's day:

Day 12.197: Work for some
While I was at work today, Exile #2 and E5N1 spent some time at the beach. During their visit, they made a small detour to buy ice-cream from this little store we'd heard about:

Day 12.196: Scarborough Community Concert in the Park
This evening, while Exile #3 was at work, the rest of us went to Scarborough where we met some friends, ate a picnic and listened to the wonderfully named Motor Booty Affair while the sun went down.

Day 12.195: Gonneville Farm
On Saturday evening, after we picked up E5N1 from camp, we were in need of an easy dinner option for the three of us (the girls were both at work). We decided to try Gonneville Farm - a place we'd driven by many times.
We went inside to escape the worst of the heat to eat dinner - great freshly cooked simple food and not too expensive.
Then we came outside to eat some ice-cream or sorbet:
and say hello the kids:

Day 12.194: That's great
As we were walking through the mill the other day, we spotted what looked like a concrete disk hanging from a pipe. What could it be?
Answer - a concrete disk hanging from a pipe.
But stranger than that - it looks like the pipe used to be hanging from the floor above until a disk was cut out to put a drainage grate in - and that disk was exactly where the pipe-support was mounted. I'm sure it was the only possible place for that grate. Right?

Day 12.193: Teenage summer
This was Exile #3, her three best friends, Exile #4 and E5N1 (almost out of shot) playing ring-toss after everyone else had left yesterday:
they followed it up with a long game of Mafia and it ended up being a pretty late night. This has been a habit for Exile #3 in particular this summer who is usually a morning and early-night person. She tells me that with her eleven-thirty-to-midnight-ish bed-time she is still often the party-pooper in her group, but it is still extremely late for her.

Day 12.192: Exile #2's Sunday Column #257
Exile #2 writes...
Having recently become citizens, we thought we should mark the occasion with some kind of celebration. In our usual style, it was fairly last minute, but we spent a very pleasant evening with neighbors and friends.
Some kindly brought food appropriate to the occasion, while others brought appropriately themed gifts such as an apple pie scented candle, a bottle of bud, and a bag of corn! Exile #3 still has a group of friends in the basement playing games with Exile #4 and E5N1 but us oldies have decided it’s time to put our feet up.

Day 12.191: What time is it? Show time!
We brought E5N1 home from camp this morning, but not before we watched the musical theater production that forty-something kids had spent the evenings of the week working on (days are for crafts and swimming and boating).
It was great as usual and E5N1 in his graduating year from this camp had a great part with lots of good comic timing. This is a still from one of the best moments:
He was predictably tired. So are we because we have a thing going on tomorrow which has been using up a lot of our energy over the last few days.

Day 12.190: Vacation!
I had the day off work today and Exile #2 and I joked that it was our vacation for this year. Well, really we were only half joking - or maybe a bit less than half. Anyway, we had a nice lunch out and did some shopping but I didn't take any photos so instead, I'll answer the question - that nobody was asking - what would happen if someone stood still wearing the same shirt and smiling for a few decades.

Day 12.189: Week ending
After a week of this:
(that was after we submitted our passport applications on Monday).
We will soon be reunited with this one:
(photo sent by one of his camp counselors) who has his last full day of camp tomorrow followed by the performance of his music theater show on Saturday morning and then he'll be returning home.

Day 12.187: Work trip
Not the normal kind!
Today, a group of us - five locals and three out of town visitors left the office early to go out for a celebration dinner. It was quite an evening.
We took the ferry from Portland - past some different views of some familiar landmarks.
Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse and Portland Head Light:
Fort Gorges and the Eastern Promenade:
Through the islands to Diamond Cove on Great Diamond Island, where we had dinner at Diamond's Edge
before returning as the sun was setting:
That definitely beats a normal afternoon in the office!

Day 12.186: The baby whisperer?
This happened at church yesterday morning:
Baby C is about a month old. Exile #4 was quite smitten and has since decided that Exile #3 is the dog expert and she is the baby expert.
Having said that, just after I took this he started with some fairly half-hearted grumbling and Exile #4 took about a millisecond to pass him back to his mom.

Day 12.185: Exile #2's Sunday Column #256
Exile #2 writes...
E5N1 headed off to camp today. He’s been counting down the days, so hopefully he will have lots of fun.
The camp is the same one that he’s done for a couple of years now. The campers will rehearse a musical for the next few days then perform if for us all on Saturday. The weather looks mostly dry, if a little humid at times, so it should be perfect. We look forward to watching the show and collecting a happy, if sleepy, camper next weekend.

Day 12.184: Ten days ago...
Sometimes there are days like today - when the girls went to work, and we got some chores done around the house and no photos were taken and there are no stories to be told. Fortunately, sometimes I look back and find a day when too much happened to write about it all, so here is some old-news from a trip that four of us made to the beach before the fireworks on July 3rd.
I spent some time trying to catch the terns diving with limited success.
E5N1 got wet - fortunately he had dressed appropriately on this occasion!
We all crossed Goosefare Brook into Old Orchard Beach - some of us like this:
and one of us like this:
and just before we left we spotted this seagull picking this large and rather cartoon-like fish carcass clean:
