Day 16.209: One bird at the beach

On Sunday morning, Exile #2 and I went for a morning walk on the beach. Having walked from Bayview to Camp Ellis, we reflected that we'd seen nothing except gulls and decided to return through Ferry Beach State Park to see if anything more interesting was going on there.

No sooner had we said that than this happened:

Bald eagle flying overhead with an apparently decapitated fish

The eagle landed on the top of a pine tree and perched, somehow still holding the large fish in one set of talons

Close-up view

The view from the other side was possibly even better, although you wouldn't know the fish was there

We watched as first the gulls and then a pair of crows expressed their unhappiness about the eagle's presence, but since it seemed inclined to neither eat the fish nor to fly off with it, we continued on.

Amazingly, almost immediately we saw an eagle fly over with a similarly mangled fish, but we went back to check that this one was still there (it was), so we actually saw two bald eagles with the fruits of their fishing trips within the space of a few seconds.
