Our Saturday morning birding happened at Sanford Lagoons (also known as Sanford Sewerage District) where we had obtained special permission to be on a weekend day.
There were reports of a very rare-for-Maine bird - an eared grebe - and we were lucky enough to get some good looks at it.

| Towards the end of our visit it was hanging with two American coots |

| While near the coots it seemed to contemplate nap |

Vickery [Birds of Maine] reports fewer than ten records in the state since 1977. One was on fall at this location in 2006, the last fall record he reports was in 2012. This sighting was a life bird for the whole group - that is in itself a first for sure.
