One of the reasons a visit to Saco Heath is so striking is the surprise as you emerge from the woods into the heath landscape - a rather bleak one despite the mass of vegetation.
Little moments of drama can still be found however. For instance - we discovered that this is what a pitcher plant flower looks like:
The plants flowers and insect traps are kept a surprisingly long distance apart to prevent the pollinators falling victim to the plant they are pollinating.
We also saw these pretty little flowers which appear to be sheep laurel:
...which is also known as lambkill because it is deadly poisonous to sheep (and cattle, and humans).
