Day 11.116: Exile #2's Sunday Column #203

Exile #2 writes...

Any Welsh Mainers wanting to grab a daffodil from their yard for St David’s Day on March 1st are generally out of luck. Turns out, you have to wait until May 1st for the daffs to show up. Even now, it’s risky to commit to frost-sensitive plants like tomatoes. Maine weather has a way of turning on you, just when you think you’re safe.

This week, our inboxes have been full of spring weather warnings reminding us not to get carried away just because we have had one day in the 80s (high 20s). I have a fondness for the writers of NOAA (The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), who issue these warnings, as I’m sure I’ve mentioned before. They have a way of describing weather hazards that is so totally American, so much the blockbuster Hollywood movie in comparison to the BBC's sensible TV drama. This week, we received the following:

“The warm temperatures expected today, combined with very cold waters will create a hidden danger to those venturing out on the water, particularly those on kayaks and canoes. Water temperatures are mostly in the 40s... Without cold water protective gear, these temperatures will incapacitate even a good swimmer in minutes. Of course, paddlers should always wear a life jacket, but they should also be aware that a life jacket will not protect you from cold water.”

Chilling words, I’m sure you’ll agree.
