When I went to college in the UK, first year students were called "freshers" - presumably adopted at some point as a gender-neutral term to replace "freshmen". There was a lot of gender-neutral terminology around then - three decades ago - but it seems that such gender-awareness is jarring to some and all-too-often treated as political in this country.
Anyway - here the four years of high school and the four years of college are often referred to by the terms, freshman, sophomore, junior, senior. Of course, that first term is one that can now be used of this one:
- and it's less jarring (to my ears) than it was when his siblings reached the same milestone.
It seems he did fine and after one more day of school tomorrow, it will be time for a four-day holiday weekend - a gentle start to the new school year.
