Day 17.025: Exile #2’s Sunday Column #467

Exile #2 writes…

E5N1’s history teacher was off work sick this week, so he left instructions for the class to watch an educational reality TV show called Electric Dreams. E5N1 informed me that it was British, and involved a family having to go back to living with the technology of previous decades. The episode they watched was about the 1970s and E5N1 was struck by the tiny basic black and white TV, the small fridge with no freezer at first, and the general absence of electronics - although Pong did, of course, arrive at some point.

It was a little sobering to realize Exile #1 and I are now history (the kids were never in any doubt) but as confirmation, Exile #1 found this glorious photo, where he might as well have been the poster boy for 1970s tech. Please enjoy the small black and white TV, the ZX Spectrum computer, complete with tape player for loading games and, of course, a magnificent digital watch!

Here’s a Wikipedia article about the series: Electric Dreams

  1. Bonus point for spotting a (defunct/superceded?) ZX81 loitering in the background

    1. Definitely a bonus point! Just superceded as far as I recall. I think it worked as long as you didn't wobble the 16K RAM pack as you typed!
