Although it used to surprise us, we've become accustomed to seeing the gulls take clams up above the beach and drop them onto the sand to break them open:
Usually at that point they try to eat it as quickly as possible while guarding against the other gulls that try to steal their ready-prepped seafood. This one however did the opposite - making a big show of its success:
It was then we remembered the group of "teens" we had spotted a few minutes before:
and sure enough, here they came:
After all three arrived, the adult quickly left them to their squabbling, flew out a little way, plopped down into the water and amazingly took off with another surf clam in its beak, flew a little way down the beach and had its own quiet clam breakfast:
