This afternoon, E5N1 and I headed out to a brass concert his band teacher had mentioned was happening in the next town. As one of E5N1’s friends was sitting in on the drums, he was keen to go along.
I didn’t know much about it, apart from that it was happening at the Salvation Army hall. The Salvation Army, in fact, were hosting, and kicked things off with a few pieces. They then handed over to the New England Brass Band which, it turns out, describes itself as New England’s premier brass band “in the British style”.
They were really very good. They started off with a piece by John Williams and a march written for the coronation of George VI, followed by Nimrod from the Enigma Variations. E5N1's band teacher took the solo on a lovely version of the Concierto de Aranjuez, made famous by its appearance in the movie Brassed Off, they then played an impressive piece celebrating the year of the dragon, however not the Chinese dragon as you might expect but rather the Welsh one. We were pleased to have gone and hope to catch them again sometime.
