Day 7.208: Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge

After my race on Saturday, we walked the one mile Carson Trail at the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge headquarters in Wells. The trail is in woodland, but with varied views out over the adjoining salt marsh.

We didn't see much in the way of wildlife except for insects and arachnids, but we had a very nice visit with E5N1 reading the paragraphs of explanation from a trail brochure at each of the eleven marked points on the trail.

This is some of what we saw:

1) Wood nymphs (butterflies & caterpillars), harvestmen (daddy long-legs) - including one eating one of the aforementioned caterpillars - and a beetle:

2) Fungi and a chlorophyll-less parasitic flowering plant (Indian pipe) masquerading as a fungus:

3) Views and trails:

It's a beautiful spot for a short but eventful walk.
