Day 8.280: Fort Foster Park

We visited the southernmost point in Maine today - Gerrish Island south of Kittery. The town park there contains the remnants of the 20th century defences of Fort Foster and some waterfront on both the ocean and on the Piscataqua.

In addition to the remains of the fort, and the nearby lighthouses and fall colours, we saw a number of interesting birds including a northern harrier, wood ducks and a huge number of cormorants flying along the coast as part of their migration.

The most surprising migration we witnessed was going on all around us - as we were surrounded by monarch butterflies - at times literally.

Afterwards, we broke our journey home with a very nice lunch at Federal Jack's and a quick visit to Goose Rocks Beach.
