Day 18.235: Campobello

We spent the main part of the day in Canada - visiting Campobello Island. The bridge across the border is only half a mile from where we’re staying:

After clearing Canadian customs and immigration, we went to the Roosevelt Campobello park to learn about FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt's summer cottage (only 18 bedrooms) and about their lives and work.

After that, we drove along the park's carriage roads to the southeastern point of the island Liberty Point where the mist that we had woken up to still had a hold on things.

It was a completely different story when we went to the northern end of the island - just 12 miles or so away. There we visited  Head Harbour Lightstation. A lighthouse that can only be accessed on foot at low tide - and then only by a combination of picking over weed-covered rocks and traversing some very steep stairs.

While we were there, we ended up with a group of locals who were watching the whale-watching boats hoping to see what they were looking for. Most of the boats were small to medium sized motor boats, but some were whale-watching in more style:

And sure enough, after a while we caught several glimpses of a common minke whale:

At the end of the day, back on our side of the border, we had a lovely dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary:
