Day 18.241: Mammals in Downeast Maine

Here are some of the mammals we saw (the whale excluded). Thanks to J for the assist with the seals.

Seal - likely a harbor seal swimming below West Quoddy Head Lighthouse on the first day

A small rodent at the parking area on that same visit

American red squirrel - on the trails that day

Another seal - likely a gray seal on the foggy morning at the Lubec flats as the tide came in

He rolled over and opened his mouth before disappearing

This squirrel struck a different pose each time the shutter went

It was pretty adorable

After this one he got really annoyed and ran back to the trunk of the tree and shouted at us until we were out of sight (sorry little friend)

Another red squirrel later on the same walk

More seals - this time after the sand bar disappeared below the tide on Saturday's visit

Left is gray seal, right could be a female gray seal or a harbor seal

Apart from those, I think we saw a chipmunk (but only one or possibly two as far as I recall). I don't think we saw any gray squirrels or woodchucks. We didn't see beavers or muskrats. We did have a close encounter with a white-tailed deer but it was in the woods and first too close to photograph and then managed to disappear into the trees. The only porcupines and racoons we saw were sadly roadkill.
