Day 18.236: Cutler and Jasper

I'm glossing over a lot of bird and animal sightings, I promise I'll come back to them in due course.

Today we started out at Cutler Coast Public Land. Before we left the parking lot we were interrupted by a local lady sitting in her car who, having greeted us, got out to tell us a tale of her great uncle getting shipwrecked at the bottom of the cliffs and successfully climbing up to the top in seawater soaked clothes. After the tale, we hiked the mile and a half through the woods to the shore, then probably about half a mile along the coastal trail before returning the way we came.

On the trails:

When we first arrived at the cliffs, the mist was still clinging thickly along the shore, but by the time we returned, it had completely cleared.

After lunch down the coast in Machias, we visited Jasper Beach in Machiasport. It's a surprising pebble beach in a beautiful cove - quite unlike most of this coastline. It's clear when walking on the steep stony beach just how big the tides are here (a daily swing of 12 to 15 feet).

Libby Island Lighthouse (from the beach)

The oddly-asymmetrical tower overlooks the parking area. I assumed it was a water tower but it turns out that it’s an old radar station (thanks to J for the tip!)
