Day 18.246: Exile #2’s Sunday Column #537

Exile #2 writes…

Although we knew we were crossing over into Canada for our recent day trip to Campobello, somehow it was still surprising to find our phones on Atlantic, rather than eastern time, speed limits in kilometers per hour, and all signage in French and English.

We hadn’t planned on staying long at Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt’s summer home but it turned out to be fascinating. After a quick tour of the neighbor’s newly restored home, we headed for “tea with Eleanor”, an opportunity to share a pot of tea with various fellow visitors whilst listening to stories about Eleanor’s life and her many accomplishments, including involvement in the civil rights movement and in chairing the United Nations committee that created the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

After that we were shown around the house which, despite its size, was not extravagantly furnished. One piece, however, caught our eye - an enormous megaphone. This was not, in turned out, for use on the campaign trail but rather to call the family in from the garden and beyond. Definitely something I could have done with from time to time!

Ed: I found this unattributed picture online that shows the cone in the foreground  it was in the same spot in the dining room when we visited  it apparently is very light due to its paper construction
