Day 18.287: Fort Foster Park

Exile #2 and I drove down to the southern edge of Maine to visit Fort Foster this morning. We saw some birds, but I'll save those for another post, but here are some other things we saw.

I believe that is Appledore Island in the distance

Fungus on the cut end of a felled tree

Wild radish

American pokeweed

Japanese barberry

Whaleback lighthouse

A less obstructed view

Northern seaside goldenrod

I don't know the story behind this...fire hydrant perhaps?

We saw a few monarchs embarking on the journey across the mouth of the Piscataqua River to New Hampshire. This one was refueling

Cabbage white

No, my name is not William

This door is labeled "Mine Casemate", a term I had to look up. It is a secure control/equipment room where mines offshore could be remotely detonated.

One bird-related photo. These neat rows of holes are evidence of yellow-bellied sapsucker visits.

I'd photographed this weathered door before - presumably another secure area from the active years of the fort

    1. ;) We're at the time of year where hats-for-warmth and hats-for-sun-protection are both considerations!
