Thanks to Deborah for playing along on the mystery photo. It was a good guess - that is a bit of grass that we have managed to bring back to something like lawn from a much worse place.
However, the real reason is that not all the things dotted on the grass are leaves.

How about now:
There were several (dark-eyed juncos with a few assorted sparrows mixed in), and then there were a lot and then a few more arrived. Not long after that, they had all gone again.
We don't know what they found so interesting in our grass, but whatever it was, they were welcome to it!
We are very disappointed not to have solved this puzzle!
