Day 12.167: Snipe?

As I was arriving back at work after lunch yesterday, I spotted an unusual-looking bird on the driveway. My first impression was that it looked like a tiny kiwi - with a rather long and fairly fat beak and generally squat appearance.

It was remarkable enough that I stopped the car and jumped out to try to get a better look or a photo. The photos were pretty poor - as it moved away from me and then eventually took to the air:

Current best-guess is a common snipe, but I welcome other opinions!
