Even after living here for seven and a half years, I still find this time of year visually astonishing. The maple tree in front of our house is currently turning from green through yellow to bright scarlet from the top down. When this is reproduced along an entire roadside, the effect is amazing. Of course, this means a not insubstantial pile of leaves growing on our front lawn which I will need to tackle this week.
This afternoon we took advantage of the sunshine and breezes and went to fly kites and watch the world go by at Bug Light Park. We were in good company - the sky was full of kites, some of them quite large and spectacular. Bug Light is across the Fore River from Portland, in South Portland and although the park is small, there is so much to see: airplanes coming in to land, sea kayakers, sailboats and windjammers. We saw the bridge over the river lift to let an enormous tanker through but decided that we couldn't quite hang around long enough to see the Nova Star cruise ship set sail for Nova Scotia. All in all a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
My wife & I took an overnight ferry over to Nova Scotia back around 1990 or so, and spent a week driving counter-(anti-?)-clockwise around its coast. So many sights to see! Highly recommended!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely on our list - the drive more than the ferry. The ferry is probably the same service - just reintroduced this year from Portland to Yarmouth. At the moment it's not clear whether it is a sustainable business however.
