It was clearly in completely the wrong part of the sky to be part of a normal rainbow - being near rather than opposite the sun. A bit of research suggests that it was probably a sun dog. Something new for me!

Day 9.292: Sun dog?
There was little sign of the sun or any of its pets today - as we had a very wet and windy day. A few days ago however, this small rainbow spot in the clouds caught my eye:
