Day 17.189: We drove to New York

In a mad jaunt, to celebrate her birthday, Exile #2 and I drove to NYC today. We’re doing a few touristy things while we’re here, but the main event was seeing the musical Illinoise at the St James Theater this evening. We love the Sufjan Stevens album Illinois from which the songs are taken but we were unprepared for the emotional rollercoaster of a show. The music is performed live by a large band and three singers while the stage actors bring the story to life through dance alone (no spoken parts and only one small section of singing from the stage cast). It is spectacular and seeing it in a Broadway Theater was a wonderful experience. We have a hotel room nearby and will make our way back home tomorrow.
