Day 17.191: The High Line

Before we left NYC yesterday morning, we walked from our hotel near Times Square to the northern end of The High Line - a park that was created from the decommissioned elevated railroad through western Manhattan.

On the way to the start, we saw the midtown skyline (including the Empire State Building).

The park itself is an extraordinary creation. About a mile and half long - with lovely planting (and lots of people working on maintaining it while we were walking. There is also some artwork, but that will wait for another post. Here are some views from our walk down the length of it and back.

There are quite a few nods to the railroad that used to occupy it (sometimes beside the path, sometimes the path itself:

And the park offers views of the city that would otherwise be difficult to experience:

All told we walked about six miles on the round trip (including a short detour to another park but that can wait too.

  1. You probably would not be surprised to learn that the High Line is a common hangout for NYC art students (and their parents from time to time), as Tall_guy 2.0, who took cartooning at nearby SVA, could attest.

    1. Very cool - we could see how important green spaces would be to us if we were in the city for any length of time.
