Day 8.050: Exile #2's Sunday Column #46

Exile #2 writes...

Happy St David's Day, y'all! I had to go about the day unadorned, as we are a good three feet of snow away from seeing ground, let alone daffodils but I have rustled up a batch of Welsh cakes, so we'll just have to mark it that way.

Despite the snowpack, there is an air of spring about the place and the melt has begun. That's not to say we won't have another covering or two before we are done with winter but it does feel like the end is in sight. We regularly have to shatter E5N1-length icicles from above the garage door and each one feels like a triumph.

On our shopping list for next year is a roof rake. For those fortunate not to have to know, this is a scraper on the end of a very long handle which allows you to clear the first foot or so of snow off the roof, thus preventing it from forming ice dams. Ice dams are a problem because rain and meltwater gets stuck behind them and backs up under the roof shingles. With the winter we have had, we got caught a little off guard and ended up with quite an impressive formation. To hopefully remedy the problem, we have employed a Blue Peter-style fix involving tights (pantyhose) and calcium chloride. Here's to the duct tape school of engineering - let's hope it will see us through the big melt!
