Day 7.359: Exile #2's Sunday Column #38

Exile #2 writes...

We awoke to about 4 inches of snow, topped off with a nice thick icy crust; the kind of snow that holds your weight momentarily before unnervingly giving way underneath you.

Digging out was a daunting prospect. Our first attempts at shoveling just saw our shovels bounce off and slide over the top. We discovered that we first needed to break the crust into fragments with sharp blows before we could dig and even then it was difficult because the top layer was so heavy. We were rescued by our neighbor across the road, who kindly lent us his snow blower so that Exile #1 could clear the driveway. Meanwhile, Exile #3 cleared a way to the front door and Exile #4 and I uncovered the Wizard of Oz-style basement door and made a path from the shed to the generator hookup, just in case of a power outage. Exile #4 eventually gave up on her shovel and took to breaking the ice like an arctic fox, rearing up and plunging into the snow paws (well, hands) first. It was surprisingly effective.

All of our usual Sunday activities were canceled or abandoned due to the weather and so we made the most of our last vacation day, watching Jean-Luc Picard being turned into a Borg and playing Ticket to Ride.

Oh, and E5N1 and I took our first steps into the literary world of Harry Potter. He was too young to have enjoyed it when it was the bedtime read for Exiles #3 and #4 and I am very happy to be starting over.

Tomorrow, everyone is back to school and the usual routines. Ours has been a very nice holiday. I hope yours has been too.
